Autumn Meeting Report from Taunton and Pickeridge

SOMERSET GOLF CAPTAINS AUTUMN MEETING 2024

On Thursday 26th September, 44 Captains descended on Taunton and Pickeridge for the curtain-closing Autumn Meeting, played in the usual 4 Ball Better Ball format.  Despite a few heavy showers, the day was relatively kind from a weather point of view, considering the deluges that had affected golf in September.

Some very good golf was played, not least by our President Roy Parmiter and partner, past-President Bob Acland, who had 43 points in the first group out.  Vice-President Iain Robertson and Andy Willett snatched the lead away immediately with 44 points on their home course, but Roy was still looking good for the Griffith Trophy for the combined scores for the Spring and Autumn events.  Or so we thought…

Worlebury pairs have always done well in our events and this time was no exception with Peter Phillips and Barry Saunders returning a stellar 46 points which was almost matched by Simon Waddington and John Gray (Stockwood Vale) with an excellent 45.   In the final group, Marcus Woodward (Saltford) and Martin Morgan (Worlebury) also returned a fine 44 points.

The leading scores for the Autumn 4 ball were as follows:

1st Peter Phillips and Barry Saunders – 46 points
2nd Simon Waddington and Joh Gray – 45
3rd Iain Robertson and Andy Willett – 44 on CB
4th Martin Morgan and Marcus Woodward 44 on CB

Simon Waddington also had the nearest the pin on the 6th hole and Rob Ford snatched the prize on the 16th in the very last group.

The Griffith Trophy turned out be a very close call with President Roy’s combined 87 being overhauled by both Barry Saunders and Simon Waddington with 89, Barry winning on countback with the better Autumn Meeting score.

Photos from T&P will be added to the web site in the next week or so when our intrepid Web Site Manger returns from his holiday.

I would like to thank all our Captains for their support on the day and throughout the year.  Running these events is made very worthwhile by seeing everyone enjoying the day (whatever their score) and making more friends in our amazing “society” of Captains.

Finally, a big thank you to Taunton Pickeridge Golf Club and all the team there for the excellent condition of the course, for the delicious food and drink and the very warm welcome we received.

Have a safe winter and good luck to the Somerset Team at St Mellion on 8th and 9th October!  Bring another Trophy home boys!
